We recommend that playsets should be cleaned and re-stained every 1-2 years if using water based stain, and every 3-5 years if using an oil based stain. This keeps your playset in the best condition possible, ensuring safety and visual appeal.
Non-Wood components, usually plastic and vinyl accessories, such as belt swings, telescopes, steering wheels, slides, and roofing can be cleaned with warm soapy water.
Wooden material cleaning can vary based on condition. For light discoloration, you can clean and re-stain only the affected areas. For widespread discoloration, the entire playset may need cleaning and re-staining.
Three cleaning options include:
- Hand Cleaning: Mix equal parts household bleach and water to clean mild stains. For tougher discoloration, scrub with a solution of 1 cup tri-sodium phosphate (TSP), 1 cup bleach, and 1 gallon of water. Let the wood dry fully before re-staining.
- Commercial Solutions: Many products are available to clean and restore wood. These typically use non-chlorine bleach, detergents, or oxalic acid, and come with clear instructions.
- Power Washing: This method can save time but must be done carefully. Use low psi, keep at least 12 inches away, and test on a hidden area first. Improper use can damage wood and void warranties. Remove components vulnerable to water damage before washing.
